Auckland Series: Simunovich Olive Estate

The Simunovich family first started growing olive trees in the Adriatic island of Brac more than two centuries ago. Now, that tradition still thrives on their Simunovich Olive Estate nested in the Bombay Hills in Auckland.

The estate is situated over 96 hectares of land and has over 40,000 olive trees which matures in just over six years! It produces over 150,000 bottles of extra virgin olive oil every year and it is the largest privately-owned olive grove in New Zealand.

Aside from the olive oil, The Simunovich Olive Estate also produces a variety of skin care that incorporates the oil and the olive leaf extract. Their skin care include products such as baby massage oil, natural soaps and creams and is available onsite or at selected retailers.

The estate radiates a tranquil vibe and it is in the secluded side of Auckland, where it is far from the busy city life. The Mediterranean-style olive groves and the various features around the estate (such as the pavilion, small lake and stunning lamps) is pleasant and creates a relaxing atmosphere. They also have an in-house restaurant, Bracu, that overlooks the estate. So if walking around is not your cup of tea, you can always sit on the porch and admire the view over a glass of wine, or two!

The Simunovich Olive Estate may be out of your way, but it is worth the trip! Olives are harvested in the autumn and winter, so if you want to see plump olives hanging from the trees, make sure you visit between March to August!
