Every year, Como hosts an adrenaline-pumping motorboat race, known as the "Hundred Miles Of The Lake". Crazy speeds in a rather narrow water basin, all "spiced" by an helicopter flying few meters above the water for the television coverage. This is an ideal setting for an action movie! Read more!
Every year, Como hosts two important motorboat races. Every last week of September, there is on the lake the “Hundred Miles”, and one or two weeks after there, is the Class One world championship race. I prefer the first one; the speed and the power of the boats is less than the speed and power of the Class One motorboats, but this allows to have a greater number of participants, with boats of varying power, divided into categories.
The small basin (only two kilometres between opposite banks of the lake) allows the viewers to see the boats at a close distance, in fact, you can use a 135 or 200 mm to take pictures of the race without the need of an extreme telephoto lens.
This is a great environment to make a sport or an action movie with breathtaking chases between high speed boats!
This lake is located in the North of Italy, few kilometres from Switzerland, and it is surrounded by the local Pre-Alpine mountain chain.
A helicopter flying few meters above the water, following every competitor and performing spectacular turns.
This was the helicopter of the television. Imagine now an action movie with boats and helicopter in this beautiful place. The Como Lake (also known as Lario) is considered one of the most beautiful in Italy!
In the photo above you can see the cameraman and his assistant!
On the background there is the wonderful fountain of Villa Geno!
This motorboats are head to head, who will be able to take the leadership of the race? The next two photos could be the images of a chase!
I used my trusty Praktica camera with a 135mm and a 200mm lenses to take these photos.
When shooting handheld at these focal lengths, remember to use a fast shutter time, at least 1/250 of a second!
