Long holidays in spring are not that common in Slovenia; what we prefer are daily getaways or daytrips. On the first of May, the international labour day and off-day in Slovenia, half of Slovenia goes to the seaside and the other half to Bled.
Next to Ljubljana, Lake Bled is the most popular travel destination in Slovenia. It is situated an hour away from Ljubljana and half an hour from international airport Brnik, in the west-northern hilly part of Slovenia.
Slovenia has a lot of lakes, but Bled is by far the most popular one. Even when I meet foreigners in Slovenia and ask them what their travel destinations are, I always know what they are going to say. I’ve seen Bled on lists of the most beautiful places in Europe, I’ve seen Bled in random blogs where people listed the places they must visit before they die. It has its charms, I can’t deny that, but it’s getting too crowded. Summers are becoming unbearable, so spring is definitely the time of the year to go.
Lake Bled is around 2km long and 1km wide and in the middle it has an island which is the main tourist attraction. You can go to the island by a traditional boat called a pletna.
In the island, there is St. Mary’s Church where you can ring a good luck bell. Exactly 99 stairs lead to the church and when newlyweds come to the island, the groom must carry his wife to the top of the stairs.
By the lake there is a town called Bled. The town has a long history, it was first mentioned around year 1004. It has a little center, but it is getting swallowed by new hotels and casinos. What you must do in town is taste the traditional vanilla and cream pastry called kremsnita. It’s a must, you can’t go home without tasting it.
Up on the hill, there is a castle overlooking lake and town. It was bulit in the middle ages but it is completely renovated. You can get beautiful views of the Lake Bled and surrounding mountains from the top.
The lake gets quite warm in summer and you can swim in it. You can also borrow a boat as rowing is a very popular pasttime in Bled. Our multiple Olympic medalist in rowing, Iztok Cop comes from Bled.
Bled can also be a starting point to other destinations. Around it, there are numerous hills and mountains to climb, there are other lakes (half an hour away from Bled is lake Bohinj, which I consider the most beautiful Slovenian lake) and vintgars, skiing centers, an adrenaline center and also a labyrinth. You can go sky diving, parachuting, whatever your heart desires.
But if you want some solitude, come in spring.
