SoLocations: Singapore's Gillman Barracks

Gillman Barracks is a great place to visit while staying away from the hubbub. Turn off your electric devices, immerse yourselves in the ocean of contemporary art, and give your mind a break while admiring the artists' hearts and souls.

Gillman Barracks, located at Alexandra Road, consists of a cluster of buildings that exhibit contemporary art creations.

Named after the well-known British army officer, the late General Sir Webb Gillman, the existing 14 buildings were set up in the 30’s for the expansion of British infantry in Singapore, and were taken over by Singapore Army Force (SAF) in 1971, as part of the withdrawal of British army from Singapore. The site was renamed as Gillman Village in 1996 for commercial purposes, but shortly after that, in 2010, it was renamed as Gillman Barracks, a site for contemporary art pieces, creative businesses and housing art.

Surrounded by the greenery, the buildings were sophisticated in black-and-white . The galleries were spacious and comfortably lightened. Stepping into each gallery gives you different kind of artistic aroma. Accompanied with the soothing music, you can feel your tied up nerves loosen while your mind drifts away from the reality for a moment.

It was my first time visiting there and luckily, the staff was nice. She gave me a map and gave me a brief introduction on the galleries were showing.

I was particularly attracted to the still-life paintings exhibition, “Sui generi/s” by Luciano Ventrone. At the very first sight of his art pieces, I thought they were photos, but they are actually oil paintings on linens! They were extremely well-executed that you could not even judge them as paintings or photos. They were disastrously amazing.

I will definitely pay more visits to Gillman Barracks, as it is a fantastic place to get my mind its much needed rest, and at the same time, to expose myself to great artists’ work. From the information of the lady I met, each exhibition will last for two months. For more information, please visit Gillman Barracks’ Official Website
