SoLocations: The Botanical Garden of the University of Coimbra

When back home in Coimbra (Portugal), one of my favorite "me" activities is to spend some time in the Botanical Garden of the University, taking pictures of its many beautiful trees and especially the flowers. This requires time and patience and I love spending hours looking for the perfect photo of these beautiful muses.

The Botanical Gardens of the University of Coimbra were founded in the 18th century by the Marquis of Pombal. It belongs to the Natural History Museum and to a larger project of modernization of the centennial university, in the principle with the “Age of Enlightenment” that was sweeping through Europe.

There are many beautiful buildings from that time that you can visit during a trip to Coimbra, but my favorite place is the Botanical Garden. It is open until sunset, and is often visited by students, tourists and couples looking for a spot that is generally calm and peaceful.

I have always loved going there to feed the giant gold fish, read a book and more recently, shoot the flowers. I love taking my time around the flower beds, switching lens and shooting macros, all things that take time and are better done alone.

The garden has many species of centennial trees, including a quite famous Ficus macrophylla that takes over the steps of an entrance:

But my favorite subjects are, of course, the beautiful flowers:

They are beautiful subjects on their own and also great for doubles. When I wanted to shoot flowers for my “Summer dream” album, this is where I spent some hours looking for the perfect muse for macros, the best colorful textures and the most gorgeous water lilies to drown in:

And when you’re there, take some time to also visit the historical buildings of the Botanical and Zoology department, with their gorgeous architecture and beautiful portuguese azulejos.
