Spring Break Getaways: Xiamen with my Diana Mini

Finally, Winter is wearing off and the sun is bringing its share of warmth and light back again. What a better occasion to get overseas for a weekend? China is a vast country, and there's always some more to explore. This time, I decided to head up to Xiamen, the Garden of the Sea, together with my Diana Mini!

Xiamen, China.

I don’t know why I picked up such a location for a getaway weekend with my girlfriend… Ah yes, now I remember. We snatched a set of promo flights at a good price. I probably thought at that time that the location didn’t really matter, as long as you go with the right people. And the right camera, that is.

I went expecting the usual Chinese city, vast and without appeal, but the dark didn’t reveal much, since we landed at night back then. I hope I’ll be proven wrong.

Morning. I open the curtains to discover a splendid view of Gulang Yu, the small island located south west of Xiamen. The sun is pouring its light and warmth on the bay, the sea glitters. Ferries have already started their round dance between the shore and the smaller island, flooding the latter with tourists. It’s time for us to get in the game too, and we hop on a ferry.

With its colonial architecture, Gulang Yu seems out of time. Especially when you know what’s on the other side of the bay. It’s a bliss to wander in the small streets, looking at the numerous food stalls. It feels like being in Taipei, which is not too far after all. We climb the Sunlight Rock to get a better view of the islet. No disappointment here, the view is gorgeous.

Slowly the sun is fading away, the day is already over.

The following morning, we head to the University overlooked by the Nanputuo temple, which is hidden in the Wulao Peaks. There is a strange feeling about this place, something that I cannot really explain, but the area sure holds great wisdom.

And what would be a spring getaway weekend without a stop at the beach?

I leave Xiamen a bit more fulfilled than I arrived. The city is vibrant and lively, the surroundings nice and enjoyable, the people hearty and welcoming.

Like everyone, I have my fair share of strong opinions, but today I got proven wrong.
