Vinyl Havens: Egg Records, Newtown

Part 3 of 4 in a Vinyl Havens series that explores the record stores of Inner West Sydney. Next up: Egg Records!

Tucked away off the main drag of Newtown’s King St., across from an Adult Video Basement and just up the road from a sushi train and a gelato house, sits Egg Records.

Egg Records is another Newtown landmark. It opened its doors in 2000, and they’ve since opened a sister store in Brisbane.

Egg sells new and used records, as well as CDs, DVDs, and t-shirts. You can pay for the original pressings, or dip into the $5 bins for battered seconds-hand offerings.

I’ve bought many records here: the first two Clash albums, Emmylou Harris, Fiona Apple, The Statler Brothers, The Smiths, the Doors…

…but what separates them from the rest, at least in my book, are the TOYS.

One cabinet is full of Beatles memorabilia — from dolls, to fake money, ashtrays, novelty mugs, and masks. Hanging nearby is a Sergeant Pepper Nehru jacket.

Under the CD racks are Centurions, Ninja Turtles, Muppets, and Transformers.

Shelves up front contain Sega Mega Drive (Genesis), Atari, and Commodore 64 cartridges.

Under the Sale CDs are the in-package Star Wars figures.

Next to The Smiths and Earl Hines hang some in-package Army of Darkness figures.

To top it all off, there is a life-sized 3D Homer Simpson greeting you at the door.

Egg also buy records, and I’ve made a tidy amount selling Records I didn’t want any more, reinvesting in the multitude of good things they sell.

I highly recommend dropping by for a sticky-beak at the cabinets while taking in some quality music.
