Sprocket Rocket Visits Western Pennsylvania

The Sprocket Rocket goes to Western Pennsylvania, visits Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, and captures some beautiful landscapes along the way. Click through to see more.

Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania is a small town in Western Pennsylvania, best known for it’s waterfalls and hiking trails. I first stumbled upon Ohiopyle four years ago, and wrote a quick LomoLocation back in 2010.

This year, my girlfriend planned a return trip as a surprise for my birthday, and I thought the Sprocket Rocket would be the perfect tool to capture the landscapes. The town has a tiny year-round population, and in the summer it is filled with tourists who enjoy the outdoor recreation opportunities. We wanted to visit in the off-season, for a quiet, secluded experience.

The main reason we traveled back here was to tour Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater, the iconic house built in the 1930’s. At the age of 70, Wright revitalized his career by designing this house for the Kaufmann family, of Kaufmann Department Stores (now Macy’s).

The house sits atop a waterfall in Bear Run, and was hailed by Time Magazine as Wright’s “most beautiful job.” It is listed among Smithsonian’s List of 28 Places to Visit Before You Die and members of the American Institute of Architects named the house the Best All-Time Work of American Architecture. It was the family’s weekend home from 1937 to 1963, and in 1963, Kaufmann, Jr. donated the property to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, who opened the house to the public as a museum.

We spent the rest of the weekend hiking around Ohiopyle state park, viewing the natural attractions it had to offer. Hiking around the Ohiopyle Falls, Cucumber Falls, and natural water slides.

And lastly, having stopped by the Jellystone Park in Kentucky a few weeks ago, we stopped to see Yogi at the Jellystone Park in Mill Run. (I included one of the Kentucky photos in my last article)

As always, don’t forget to check out my blog and be on the lookout for my next post!
