Last weekend saw the celebration of Chinese New Year (it is now the Year of the Snake for those who are interested) so me and my other half headed off to Manchester to spend some time in Chinatown there.

Chinatown in Manchester is definitely the best one I have been to in the UK. I think the layout of it really lends a sense of community, and it feels like you have left the city centre and wandered into a quieter and more secluded area. It is just a short walk from Piccadilly Gardens in the centre of the town, and can be found easily by following the information signs saying “Chinese Arch”. The arch itself is a great way to be welcomed to Chinatown, and is positioned in one of the corners of the square.
Chinatown in Manchester is not just about the restaurants that line all the streets in that area — though, of course, they are worth a number of visits and I will talk about my favourite one in a separate article — but I also think it presents a great photo opportunity due to the number of neon signs and beautiful lights that adorn many different parts of the area.
There are also a number of shops in Chinatown, selling all kinds of goods, some imported and some not. It;s good to visit and buy trinkets and take photos (most of the owners are OK with this, but I think it is polite to ask first).
So spend some time in Chinatown in Manchester and if you can be there for Chinese New Year — there is a really party atmosphere and I can’t rate it highly enough!
