Hong Kong Local Food Guide

Hong Kong is home to a variety of local and international specialties. Follow this guide to a mouthwatering adventure into local Hong Kong cuisine.

Hong Kong is known for its bustling streets, soaring skyscrapers and large luxury shopping neighborhoods. However, most people can agree that its strong point is in fact its cuisine. Hong Kong is home to a variety of local and international specialties, from traditional Chinese dim sum to classic German schnitzel. Foodie’s around the world hail Hong Kong as a food paradise. No matter how picky of an eater you are, there will always be a restaurant that caters to your taste.

Some people love Chinese food and some people hate it. However, most are only familiar with classic Chinese dishes like noodles or “chow mein”. But we at Lomography Asia are here to take you on a exploration of the abundance of finger-licking Hong Kong classics that you’re missing out on.

For starters, you can enjoy a light breakfast of golden brown toast with lightly drizzled condensed milk and a hot cup of Hong Kong style milk tea before heading out to venture through the city. Not only is this breakfast filling – it’s also easy on the wallet.

Those who are looking for a warmer meal can stop by the local congee shop. Congee is often served with an assortment of toppings such as minced beef, pig blood jello, sliced fish, preserved egg and pork. If you’re looking for a crunch, you can also pick up a dough fritter or youtiao to dip into your congee!

After walking around the city streets, you may want to recharge with a hearty Dim Sum brunch. Choose your flavor of tea and order each and every dim sum that looks appetizing. We recommended the shrimp dumplings – Har gow and pork dumplings – Siu Mai 燒賣 . Chances are they will be tastier than you could ever imagine. Get your chopsticks ready as the waitresses bring your much-anticipated dim sum to your table. These dim sum dishes will leave you energized for the rest of your Hong Kong adventure.

If you’re looking for a quick snack, a street vendor might be the easiest and most affordable source of local food. Just follow the waft of mouthwatering aromas coming from the steaming street carts. They offer quite a range… skewered tofu, curried fish balls, beef balls and grilled squid to name a few. Some street carts even offer a selection of freshly baked sweet yams and roasted chestnuts. It’s sort of the Hong Kong-equivalent to a hot dog stand.

As the sun goes down, locals begin to head home from work or school. You’ll see many locals lined up to sit down at the nearest “siu mei” restaurant. Siu mei restaurants will have an array of roasted or barbequed pork, chicken, and duck that can be accompanied with a bowl of rice or noodle soup. The classic choice would be a Cha siu fan which is barbequed pork served on a pillow of rice, topped with vegetables and a heaping amount of sweet soya sauce.

After dinner, most of us have a craving for something sweet. At Honeymooon Dessert you’ll find a wide range of desserts to satisfy any sweet tooth. A popular choice is the mango puree, which can be paired off with a light and fluffy mango crepe.
