It's currently summer in New Zealand, so if you want a lovely place to spend the warm long days, why not head down to the beautiful Silo Park which is suitable for the young and old alike?
As the first stage of the Wynyard Quarter redevelopment for the Rugby World Cup in 2011, Silo Park opened free to public in August 2011. The park exudes a distinctive characteristic where it is a combination of people, space, and industry forms. They also hold regular events such as film screenings, night markets, and music sessions of New Zealand’s up and coming bands here in the area!
There are three main features of Silo Park — The Gantry, Silos, and Wetland.
The Gantry is an urban design feature that towers on 12 meters high and extends 110 meters long. Climbing up the steel steps, you can overlook the entire Silo Park and enjoy the view. The bridge-like overhead structure with standing platforms make a wonderful scenic background, and it is even better at night when the Gantry lights up!
Back before the redevelopment, the main silo was originally used to hold cement that built Auckland. Now, it is Silo 7, and it is an outdoor cinema that screens movies every Friday night at 8PM throughout summer. You can bring along cushions and blankets, and settle in for an interesting outdoor cinema experience!
The main purpose of the Wetland feature is to treat storm water, but it adds a huge aesthetic appeal, and adds a touch of nature to the park.
There are many other points of interest in the park including a children’s playground, where you can keep the kids occupied (and sometimes find face painters offering free face paint), a Super Yacht Marina, where you can admire luxury yachts, and a night market that runs every Friday from 5PM.
So, if you’re ever in Auckland, stop by Silo Park which is situated inside Wynyard Quarter and experience a special day out!
