Auckland Series: Auckland Zoo

The Auckland Zoo - winner of multiple national and international environmental-related awards - is set in 17 hectares of flourishing parkland, and is home to over 130 different species and over 850 animals! Only a five-minute drive from the busy Auckland City Business District, this Zoo is a popular tourist attraction

Often, the emphasis of zoos are the animals, but the Auckland Zoo stresses the importance of the surroundings and aim to present to the public the natural environment and habitat of the animals. Think of it as conserving wildlife in wild places!

My favourite is the large African precinct, Pridelands, that opened in 1998 and provides a naturalistic environment for African species such as giraffes, zebras and flamingos! It’s important that you time your visit as you don’t want to miss out on any Animal Encounters that takes place at various times during the day. You can observe animal feeding and listen to the zookeeper talk about the fascinating animals.

They offer Zoom Tours that provide behind-the-scenes experience and you can chose from options such as the Elephant Experience where you can get up close and personal with the largest land mammal and help the keeper scrub them clean, and the African Experience where you can feed the giraffes by hand and meet the lions face to face!

Have kids? No problem! They have a fun and fascinating place for children called Kid Zone where your kids can play at the outdoor playground area or actively engage with chickens, pigs, rabbits and frogs.

The Auckland Zoo has something for everybody! Whether you are taking the kids out during the weekend, wandering around and admiring the animals, or (like me) armed with an analogue camera and snapping away, you can be having so much fun at the Auckland Zoo.
