Flying through Cologne's air – it's easy with the Rheinseilbahn, a cableway that rides from the Rheinpark to the Zoo. But no need to worry, despite its vertiginous height, it's still the safest means of transporation.

The cableway across the Rhine was build in 1957 for the National Garden Show and until recently it has been the only cableway in Germany which was built across a river. Actually the Zoo Bridge over which the cableway is now leading, was only built in 1966, so in the first couple of years you were hovering right over the water. Despite the bridge, the view from the enclosures over the Rhine, the Cathedral and the skyline of Cologne is still beautiful.

You best start your journey at the Rhine Park, the station is right next to the bus stop “Thermalbad” and you can take a bus from the main station and reach it in 10 minutes. The cableway, also called ‘Rheinbahn’ is always moving, so you need to be quick when entering the enclosures. You should also have your cameras ready! But don’t worry, all gondolas are completely closed and the door is locked well. Between 1957 and 2006, more than 14 million people were transported without any accident. So the cableway is not only the most unusual, but also the safest means of transportation in Cologne.

Even though the ascent looks pretty steep, you fortunately don’t notice a lot of swinging during the ride. Thanks to the large windows, you are able to snap away in all directions, no matter if you want to take a photo of the city or of the other gondolas which are passing by. You pay for your ticket after you exit at the Flora/Zoo. A single trip costs 4 Euros, but there are also round trips and other offers. Often times there is the possibility to use the cableway at night during the ‘Long Nights’ in Cologne.
