Vienna: A Cultural Heaven

Vienna is a cultural heaven. It has so much to offer, especially in Classical Music and Arts.

Grand, beautiful and historic are three words that comes to my mind when I arrived at the capital. When you are here, the cultural atmosphere here is simply overwhelming, especially to me, who is a fan of classical music, this city is a heaven for me. If you are not a huge fan of such serious music, don’t worry, Vienna has so much to offer, that you will be able to get something out of it.

The city center is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Walk along Kärntner Straße, you will find some of Vienna’s most important buildings, from Stephansdom, to Hotel Sacher, to Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera).Hotel Sacher offers the famous Sachertorte, which is a type of chocolate cake, invented specially for Prince Wenzel von Metternich in Vienna. There are also a lot of art museums in the Museumsquartier..

Music is one of Vienna’s legacies. As you stroll in the city center, you will notice there are some stars on the pavement that bear names of composers. Apart from the grand, beautiful Staatsoper, there’s also the Wiener Musikverein, where the New Year Concert by the Wiener Philharmoniker is hosted. If you are a fan of classical music, make sure you go to the houses of different composers, including Mozart, Beethoven (the House where he composed the Eroica Symphony), Schubert etc. More information about houses/apartments of composers can be found here . If you think that is not enough, you can also go to Zentralfriedhof (the Central Cemetery), where a lot of famous people, including many composers, were buried. There are actually more graves in the Central Cemetery, than the population of Vienna!

Apart from the historic city center, the Prater is also worth a visit. The Giant Ferris Wheel is one of the main attractions.

During my visit in Vienna, I dropped by the Lomgraphy Headquarters, which is located at 41 Hollergasse. I believe my visit to the HQ was a bit of a surprise to the staff. Nonetheless, I was shown around the HQ, and had a chance to see the ‘brains’ of Lomography.

Schönbrunn Palace is one of the must-go during your stay at the capital. I have written another article about the Palace.

Vienna is a very big city. What I have mentioned here is only a small proportion of it. Despite being a big city, it is very easy to move around the capital, thanks to the tram and U-Bahn. More information can be found on the city’s official site.
