There is a small airport in my city that's located near the lake and has a centuries-old tradition of flight by seaplane. It's first flight dates back to 1909! Take a look!
If you want to admire the beautiful Lake Como from the air, you can hire a seaplane with a pilot in the local Aero Club for an unforgettable flight that will allow you to enjoy the landscape and capture it on film!
This club has a long history — the first flights dates back to the beginning of 20th century and included some postal service around the lake. In 1925, an experimental service of airmail on the lake was introduced, with the delivery of postal bags in various municipalities.
The fleet of airplanes has been enriched with new models year after year, and now the club has seaplanes from different manufacturers, including the famous Cessna and Piper airplanes. Here are details of a seaplane:
The airport also offers courses to help one achieve a pilot’s license for small airplanes and seaplanes.
Maintenance is continuous and scrupulous. In this series of pictures, you can see how well-treated these beautiful airplanes are!
The flights are made by enthusiasts and pilots volunteers. In the summer season, they transport tourists in interesting routes around the lake and the Lombard Prealps. The most popular locations on the eastern side of the lake are Varenna and Lecco, while on the western side of the lake, you can see Gravedona (with its magnificent Romanic church) and the beautiful Villa Carlotta near Menaggio. At the centre of the lake there is a pearl: the wonderful town of Bellagio with its Villa Melzi and its amazing botanical gardens.
A practical tip: if you want to photograph the eastern coast is better to fly just before the sunset (the other side is in strong backlight). If you prefer to photograph the west side it’s better to take a morning flight.
So take a trip and fly over one of the most beautiful lakes in Italy!
