Summer in Bulgaria: Nessebar

This summer, I was lucky enough to spend two weeks touring around Bulgaria with three other people in a brand new Chevy! Over the next few articles, I am going to share with you some of my photos from that trip, place by place. Nessebar was somewhere that we went for a day trip as it was recommended by a Bulgarian friend as a beautiful place to see.

Nessebar is located just south of Sunny Beach Resort on the Black Sea coast. It is a very historic town, ancient in fact, and is set on an island connected to the mainland by one single road. It was historically a fishing town, and today aside from the many shops and restaurants, there are a lot of fishing boats going about their business around Nessebar.

Nessebar is a popular tourist attraction and locals have really made the most of this, with stalls everywhere selling handcrafted souvenirs, summer type knickknacks and beautiful jewellery. The island can be toured in the span of about half an hour, but I recommend spending a bit longer so you can see all the historic buildings and visit some of the local craft shops.

There is also a great opportunity to go on a boat ride around the island, which is a perfect way to see the island from afar, have a look at all the awesome water sports going on at Sunny Beach and cool down in the heat of the midday sun.

Nessebar has a wide range of beautiful restaurants and the food that they serve is exquisite, especially the seafood dishes as most of them are local to the Black Sea Coast area. I highly recommend the place we ate lunch that day, called Kapitanska Sreschta. Just like a lot of places in Bulgaria, Nessebar has a high number of stray cats, and most of our time out there was spent feeding them – as can be seen in the photos below.

In terms of photo opportunities, and just having a nice day out, Nessebar was one of my favorite places that I went to in Bulgaria, and I would be keen for a return visit if I happen to be in that neck of the woods again.
