This summer I was lucky enough to spend two weeks touring around Bulgaria with three other people in a brand new Chevy! Over the next few articles, I am going to share with you some of my photos from that trip, place by place. This article looks at the seaside town of Balchik, which was the second place we stayed in, and we were here for 7 days total.
As we had an apartment with a swimming pool in Balchik, this was the perfect place to test out my Lomography Frogeye, which, despite having for almost a year, I have not had the opportunity to shoot with before. A lot of my time in Balchik therefore, looked like this:
Balchik is popular for many other reasons, and not just the opportunity to take underwater pool shots! Firstly, we chose it as it is close to Varna, where you can easily fly from the UK (although in the end we chose not to!) but at the same time, it doesn’t attract the hoards of English tourists that the resorts such as Sunny Beach do. Not that there is anything wrong with hoards of English tourists, but we just fancied somewhere a little bit more low key! The seafront at Balchik is awesome, with little fishing boats and nice restaurants, which have dining areas on terraces over the ocean!
Balchik has some amazing restaurants and despite not being a huge seafood lover, I ate my body weight in shrimp over the week! Places I recommend eating in if you stay in Balchik are Hemingway, El Simpatico, and La Corona. Balchik is also famous for the amazing Botanical Gardens and Palace, which can easily be located from the seafront. Unfortunately, due to my car being broken into, I have lost most of my photos of the botanic gardens, except for a few night shots, so some of the photos below are from louwest (with her permission).
