Italy? No. Wales!

Wales. Land of mountains, sheep, male voice choirs and...an Italian village?! Yes, an Italian village, at least in style. Read on and see the photos to learn all about the wonderful world of Portmeirion.

Just a short drive away from the Welsh town of Porthmadog, hidden away in a forest clearing by golden sands, is a place of magic and wonder. A place of creativity and freedom, yet also a place that has become synonymous with control and imprisonment. That place is Portmeirion.

Designed and built by architect William Clough Ellis, the village was constructed during the Twentieth Century over a number of decades using found materials and original builds. Built partly as a tribute to Italian coastal villages, it has taken on a particularly British feel, mainly down to its typical British eccentricity.

However, alongside the freedom and creativity expressed in the architecture is a darker side, one that represents the modern feeling of being trapped in a world controlled by faceless bureaucrats – The Prisoner. This classic 1960’s TV show about a former spy trapped in a place simply known as “The Village” was filmed in Portmeirion. It’s what drew me to the village in the first place and it’s what continues to draw me back. Alongside the classic Italian colors and styles is a very definite British cool, a true psychedelic 60’s feel.

A place such as this can only really be done justice on two cameras in my opinion – the Lomography Spinner 360 and the Lomography Fisheye. I had the Spinner and my girlfriend had the Fisheye. I present my photos here. If you want to see her photos, just search for ‘scrappysnaps’ at Lomography and I’m sure you’ll find them.

In the meantime, enjoy my photos and please do visit Portmeirion if you get the chance. You’ll not regret it and you’ll never forget it.

I've been twice, and both times the place was full of people getting married.
