The Other Night at the Mine Zollverein: Essen Aglow!

Every summer since 2001, the "Night of Industrial Culture" happens as part of the event, "extra shift". Throughout the German Ruhr industrial sites, dumps and former coal mines are turned into major cultural venues and transformed by artists with light installations, live music, and dance performances. This year I loaded my Lubitel 166 + and checked it out.

The winding tower of the former mine Zollverein…uuuuultra long exposure!

The “Night of Industrial Culture” aims to raise interest in the 400-mile route of industrial culture, transforming the old or sometimes, even active, industrial sites, slag heaps, and mountains, mines, and industrial museums into cultural venues. Shuttle buses transport visitors from place to place, thus, letting them experience a variety of events with art, music, dance, and theater across the entire Ruhr region, displaying the history of the transformation of an entire region. I spent my time solely on the premises of the mine Zollverein, where there is already enough to see and explore for one night.

The illuminated escalator up to the coal washing facility

The Zollverein mine was once the largest coal mine in the Ruhr area, a UNESCO World Heritage site and is considered “the most beautiful in the world.” It received the name correctly, especially when the terrain is so beautifully lit as it was during the night of industrial culture.

The atmosphere that night was impressive: urban, artistic, somehow mysterious, and full of life. No sign of the noise and bustle, which determine the Ruhr area during the day.

Thus, great photos of coincidences: The streak of light coming from a passing ambulance.

All in all, a top recommendation for lovers of cultural industry! Even during the day and completely unlit, the mine Zollverein is worth a visit, on the night of industrial culture though, it turns into an event! Next year the extra shift will be on July 6, 2013. So save the date. Maybe we can turn it into a LomoWalk.
