Athens has been the site of the Games of the I Olympiad, the first Olympic Games in modern times and the largest international sporting event of the 19th century. Recently, in 2004, Athens again hosted Olympic Games at a cost of 10 billion euros.
Athens is one of the most ancient cities in the world and the site of rich heritage. Not only does it harbor one of the most marvellous architectural accomplishments, The Parthenon on the Acropolis, as well as a host of other vastly important archaeological sites, it is also the birthplace of philosophy, democracy, a cornerstone of mathematics and other sciences and in modern times one of the most hip cities in Europe!
Athens was the site of the first Olympics in modern times, in 1986. The organization was regarded as a huge success back then, having attracted the largest spectator crowd of a sporting event until then. The Games were held at the Panathinaiko Stadium, which can be seen today and which sometimes is the site of select events. Below are some images of this historic stadium, which was the only Olympic Stadium of the 1800s!
The newer Olympic Games were held at lots of different venues, many stadiums were erected specifically for the Games. The Opening Ceremony was one of the most beautiful ever, showing hellenic history.
During the time of the Games, Athens was overflowing with people and the partying was olympic!
If you have the opportunity, visit Athens. You will not regret it! :D
