With this article I present to you an adventure in the urban suburbs of my city, Como, where I photographed some rail level crossings. In these photos you can see many signs of carelessness, degradation, and poor maintenance.

If the nineteenth century was the period of construction of major rail lines, the twentieth century and the present one are the domain of cars and roads. Both are present in the territory, and often, roads and railway lines meet at a rail crossing. Here I present to you where this happens in the suburbs of my city.

In these photos you can see the most common types of rail level Italian crossings, that were widely used since the ‘70s. At that time, there wasn’t a light signal available, but the closure of barriers was anticipated by the continuous sound of a bell and by the rotation of the blades.

And this is the light signal used in Italy, now present in every rail crossing:

This is a rail crossing near the fraction of Albate:

As you can see, the light signal is missing the hood and the blades aren’t present. A symptom of the slow abandonment of investments in the railway sector.
