Bay Harbour Market, truly organic and creative! I heard a lot about The Old Biscuit Mill Market of Cape Town, but I was glad we went to Bay Harbour Market instead. It truly has a community spirit and a very relaxed atmosphere, with almost no tourists at all.
Everybody here seems to know each other, kids are running around while adults are indulging in all sorts of snacks and drinks.
We opted for an amazingly fresh biltong (a kind of cured meat that originated in South Africa) and a half pint of our new favorite drink, Castle Milk Stout, as well as freshly-cooked samosas (both meat ones and veggie). Bay Harbour is situated on the water’s edge in the old authentic part of the Hout Bay Harbour and comprises of more than 100 stalls in an old fish factory. It is a a bit of a walk from the famous Hout Bay Harbor Beach, and the smell on the way is not very pleasant because of the fishing boats, but everything is quickly forgotten once you are there.
What I found unique about the place is that traders themselves are the producers. Whatever you are interested in, organic mushrooms or ostrich eggs chandeliers, you can engage in conversation with people who actually produce it.
You can find here almost anything: handmade arts and crafts for your home such as photo frames, pillow cases, furniture, pottery, as well as quirky fashion outfits with African or bohemian references, and of course, lots of food.
Situated in one of the most scenic suburbs of Cape Town this is a fantastic region to visit. From Cape Town, you will drive along the scenic coastline and from Cape Point, you will drive along the famous Chapman’s Peak Drive.
