A Moment's Rest in Montreal

Our train pulled into Montreal and it could not have come sooner. After the short half of the journey from Toronto to Halifax, I was still sick of being on the train! We spent a grand total of 2 days in Montreal and I loved every moment of it!

We got a cheap hotel for the 2 nights that we were staying there, close to everything, the location was the main thing we were after! Only a 10-minute walk from Old Montreal, we explored one of the most beautiful, well-preserved, vibrant “old towns” this side of Europe. This spot is a key component in what makes Montreal, “the truly different North American city”. We grabbed a waffle with maple syrup for breakfast and continued on our journey.

Walking along the water to the Museum of Archaeology and History we learned about the birthplace of Montréal and saw the authentic archaeological site. It has six centuries of history – from Indian days to the present. We watched a couple of interesting video presentations, and I really liked the temporary exhibition all about the history of wine.

We headed back up the road and had some real Montreal poutine, and my gosh, was it amazing! We walked further into the downtown area and saw the original bank of Montreal and the Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecours Chapel (Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecours). I really liked this area with some cute little shops and the horse and carriages waiting on their next fare.

That afternoon, we walked by McGill University, which is Canada’s oldest university, home to nearly 30,000 students, and enjoyed seeing the variety of interesting architectural styles. We stopped into a famous chocolate shop and a candy store in the Italian district then headed back to the hotel for the night. The next day, we checked out the Musée d’art contemporain de Montreal (Contemporary Art Museum). Unfortunately, they did not allow any photography inside but it was a great space but to be honest, I thought there would be more art pieces in this type of art gallery, but I was still impressed.

Walking along Rue Ste.Catherine we found some great shopping and although we didn’t buy anything, we enjoyed going all the way to the top floor of the bay and my boyfriend really enjoyed the huge future shop. For lunch that day, we went to St Huebert’s Chicken then after a bit more of a stroll, headed back to the hotel to pick up our stuff then back onto the train it was!
