Shooting my first roll of medium format film in my Lubitel 166+ needed a special location. I took it to Tantalus, in downtown Honolulu, where the Lubitel really captured amazing views from this mountainous location.
Personally, it’s always difficult to shoot a roll of 120 film because..well, there’s only 12 shots. And that may sound contradictory, since 12 shots should be a breeze to finish. However, my subconscious is constantly thinking about the developing costs ($2.99 at Phototrends, since I haven’t gotten to the level of awesomeness required for self-dev.), the lack of opportunity to use the film beyond 12 times, and the need to produce quality shots to show my beloved Lomography community.
After all, I don’t necessarily want to post below-mediocre photos when the potential with medium format is simply endless!
So with my first roll of 120 film, I decided to take my love to the best location in Hawaii, in terms of views and scenery – Tantalus Lookout.
I knew that the views would be great and would not let me down with my results.
Tantalus Lookout is located on the top of Makiki Heights in Honolulu. It’s quite a far drive up the mountain, but trust me, the results and views are totally worth it.
Since Hawaii’s weather is generally clear and sunny, there’s a large chance that you’ll be able to see across the island, all the way to the iconic Diamond Head peak, and in the opposite direction towards the airport and suburban areas.
There is a long stone wall on the lookout area, which is perfect to just sit down and relax on. It’s the best way to take in the gorgeous scenery, and my Lubitel really captured the essence well.
Since medium format delivers such great resolution when scanned, I wanted to make sure my exposure and photo composition was better than normal. And I tried, but unfortunately, some of the photos did not deliver the magic as I had intended. However, the view from Tantalus was just so beautiful, I don’t mind as much.
No view in Hawaii has really beat the view from Tantalus, in my opinion. It’s relaxing, breezy, clear, and a great escape from the bustling city below it.
