Go Skate at San Francisco East Bay...and Bring Your Camera!

In celebration of Go Skateboarding Day last June 21st, I took a quick tour of some of San Francisco East Bay's Skate Parks; spending the day at Berkeley Skate Park and Oakland's Town Park and taking a peek into the past and a glimpse into the future of what's to come for the Bay Area.

Inspired by Go Skateboarding Day, I grabbed my cameras and my board, and headed to the best skate parks the Bay has to offer.

The Berkeley Skate Park 5th & Harrison Street, Berkeley, CA is doing its part to pass on the joys of skating to the next generation by offering classes, tournaments, and helping the smaller skaters hop the fence when the park’s supposed to be locked. Across the 18,000 square feet of concrete, older skaters yelled encouragement to younger skaters as they warmed up for a tournament. Skateboarders and razor scooters alternated turns on the fun box and when one skater landed a particularly impressive maneuver in the bowl, everyone stopped and clapped.

LC-Wide did a great job of covering everything…just wish I could have gotten a little closer to catch the action in the air.

I also went to Town Park in Oakland, CA but it was locked, deserted…and I was unable to get in. But, that’s not to say locals don’t hop the fence to take advantage of the wood ramps local artist and arts educator Keith “K-Dub” Williams built in 2007 – making it their own by skating and tagging. My cameras and I made sure to capture some of the local color that K-Dub and the local skaters have added to De Fremery Park in West Oakland.

Unfortunately, one of Oakland’s most popular parks BorderTown under the freeway overpass at Wood St & Mandela Pkwy closed down after seven years of fighting Caltrans for the right to turn an unused underpass into a skater’s paradise. But, I look forward to the opening of its replacement in San Francisco, and I’m excited to catch it all on my Lomo cameras.

So, when you head out the door today: grab your board, grab your camera, and Go Skateboarding!
