Historical Manoa

Took a Lomowalk around the old neighborhood of Manoa, Hawaii. I have found the most beautiful and stunning houses, some dating back to many years ago.

One day while having some time to kill, I decided to take a Lomowalk around one of my favorite neighborhoods and explore it to find some new gems.

Manoa was the first place to pop into my head. After all, it is one of the most highly-esteemed areas of Hawaii, with many old-timers living in the area, and beautiful houses as far as the eye can see.

My friend had asked me to tinker around with her Diana F+ that had been sitting around, unused. So I did some small mods to allow it to take 35mm film, and then started to walk around Manoa – with an open mind and open eyes, ready to take photos.

Because Manoa is populated mostly by the older generation, people who have lived in their houses for a long time. You can always see elderly couples taking strolls down the peaceful gardens and nature-infused walkways. Even the Starbucks is built with an old-fashioned facade.

Many of the houses are built, looking like they were influenced by colonial styles. White shingles, porches, timeless shutters… these houses have them all. Looking down the street and seeing gorgeous house after house is simply stunning. There are not many neighborhoods in Hawaii that have the sense of timelessness, like Manoa does.

The streets are also lined with many large, looming trees that look as if they’ve been planted there eons ago. Their stretching branches frame the sky with security and a sense of growth.

One of my favorite houses had this amazing arch built into the fencing. Stunning!

Parts of Manoa remind me of visions I can remember from my trip to London. The old-fashioned architecture isn’t exactly the same, but Manoa evokes the same longing emotions within me that London did with its beautiful buildings.

This is great! I grew up right down the street in McCully.
