Romping Around Hawaii Kai

Hawaii Kai has a reputation for having some of the most expensive homes on the island of Oahu. It's a beautiful little town with great people. So one night I took my Fujifilm Instax Mini 7 around to snap some photos of my friends around Hawaii Kai!

Hawaii Kai is a great little town, famous for its marina that sits in the middle of the area. Since it is located right along the coast and beach, the property is highly valued, and the costs of the houses can go up into the millions easily.

You would think that the people then, would be stuffy, rich kids, right? Well, not so! My love grew up in Hawaii Kai, and all of his friends there are some of the most fun, easygoing people I have met. There must be something great about living in such a beautiful, upscale area that brings out the Aloha spirit in everyone.

One night, I decided to take around my Fujifilm Instax Mini 7 to take some photos of my friends around Hawaii Kai. I brought along some colored flash and electrical tape to do some easy mods to the camera. The electrical tape is great for covering the corners of the lens, which achieves a pseudo-vignette look.

Electrical tape is also great for double exposures! You can tape off half of the lens, snap your photo, then tape off the other half and snap your double exposure to get this effect:

My tutorial on how to do double-exposures on the Instax Mini 7 is here.

When it comes to schooling, Hawaii Kai’s got some interesting choices. The high school in Hawaii Kai is named Kaiser High School. Apparently, they’ve got some of the best AP programs in the island. That’s where my love went, and for his graduation, I brought along my Instax Mini!

The Koko Marina Shopping Center in Hawaii Kai has a great selection of little shops and eateries to choose from. Plus, the marina is the perfect place for watching a sunset or just relaxing along the water. One restaurant that’s open pretty late (which is great for us kids who stay up late) is Zippy’s. They’ve got an outdoor eating area and an indoor seating, for your convenience. One night we just stayed outside of Zippy’s, chowing down and of course, taking photos.

I took this photo, while holding a red filter over the camera’s built-in flash. Red lobster!

So appearances can be deceiving. Hawaii Kai has a reputation that isn’t all quite true, and my photos are a great testament to the amazing people who live here. I haven’t been able to visit the area since my love moved away from Hawaii Kai, into downtown Honolulu, which is a more convenient location for his college, but I sure do miss it and everyone there.

The Fuji Instax Mini 7S has simple exposure control, automatic built-in flash, and uses credit card-sized Fuji Instax Mini film. And you’re in luck, because this camera is now available in adorable pink! Check it out with the rest of our Instant cameras here!
