Hosier Lane, Melbourne: the Famous Street Art Lane-Way

In only the last 10 or so years, street art has gone from the 'vandalising' of tags to a celebrated art form in Melbourne. Hosier Lane is one of the most popular places to find some street art and is also very centrally located across from Federation Square in the city center. I headed here on a walking tour of the city and here is what I found.

On our free tour we met at Federation Square and made our way through the city, along the way stopping at Hosier Lane. It is now one of the must-see things in Melbourne and the government is now embracing the street art here and in some of the other places in the city, including it in some guides to the city. As street art is so transient, the art you see in my photos has probably completely changed now, which I think is one of the great things about it. It keeps you coming back time and time again!

Around the turn of the 21st century, within the space of 3 to 4 years, many forms of street art began to appear in Melbourne including; stencil art, woodblocking, sticker art, poster art, wheatpasting, graphs, various forms of street installations and reverse graffiti. Tags are becoming increasingly less popular as the public consciousness and local councils alike, view street art as an art form and not tagging it as vandalism. A strong sense of community ownership and DIY ethic exists amongst street artists in Melbourne, whose endeavors for the progression of society through awareness was created in part by their work. The lane-way itself is a gorgeous bluestone-cobbled pedestrian walkway, which is something pretty uncommon in Australia. At one point during our walk, we were lucky enough to see some street artists at work, that is the beauty with this art form, you get to see it coming together before your eyes, which is something completely different and in some ways, more interesting and inspiring than heading to a gallery to see artwork, which has been hanging in the same room for years.
