The Ultimate Bowl of Hot Noodles: PHO!

Everyone in Hawaii can probably agree that the best noodles to grab for lunch is a steaming bowl of flavorful pho. Pronounced as "fuh" or "fah," depending where you're from, pho is a great testament to the way friendships are sustained over yummy food and how rice noodles are simply the bomb.

When my Mom first introduced me to pho, I actually didn’t really like it. The soup base is really unique and has different Asian spices that most foods don’t normally use, even within the Asian community. So I thought I’d never really try pho again…until I did…and absolutely LOVED it.

The steaming bowl of rice noodles in beef broth simply hits the spot. Especially on cold days, when you just want to snuggle up in warmth, pho is a great way to eat up and feel great.

Pho consists of rice noodles, meat (usually beef), and vegetable garnishes, like basil, bean sprouts, and onions. The rice noodles are plain, but the texture is great and thick. The beef really compliments the Asian spices in the broth. And the vegetables bring in a load of flavor to the soup, as well as additional texture. The fun part is, you can add different sauces to the pho, like chili pepper sauce (there’s multiple kinds of that), sweet plum sauce, and hot oil.

A regular store that we patron is called Cuu Long in the Aiea area of central Oahu, Hawaii. It’s got some of the largest portions of most of the pho places I’ve been to, as well as my favorite broth. Pho broth can be either really oily and taste strongly like meat, or it can be more refined and clear. I personally prefer the latter, and Cuu Long delivers in that area.

My friends and I always make an attempt to go to this location, and the pho is always fantastic. And not to mention, low prices! That makes us college students very happy.
