Iguazù Falls, the Brazilian Side in Black and White with my LC-A+

This winter (summer in the southern hemisphere), I went to Buenos Aires (Argentina), Punta del Este (Uruguay), and the Iguazù Falls (Argentina/Brazil) carrying my brand new LC-A+. Since Iguazù Falls has been my last destination, I only had a roll of film in black and white (Ilford FP4+). But I'm happy because black and white film turned out to be a perfect choice for the falls!

Since I’m half Italian and half Argentinian, I traveled to Argentina many times in my life to visit my relatives and their country, but I had never been to Iguazù Falls (Cataratas del Iguazú in Spanish, Cataratas do Iguaçu in Portuguese) before. This was my first time.

Iguazù Falls are waterfalls of the Iguazù River located on the border between Brazil and Argentina. The name “Iguazù” comes from the Guaraní language and it means “big waters” and it is easy to understand why.

The Brazilian territory has just over 20% of the jumps of these falls, and the left side jumps which are Argentines, make up almost 80% of the falls. To completely and fully appreciate the falls, the recommendation is to visit both the Argentine and Brazilian sides, like I did. A man told us that the locals say “Argentina has the stage, Brazil has the audience”. We spent 2 days in the Argentine side, which is really beautiful and widespread.

The two sides are divided into two different national parks; both were designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites and Iguazù Falls was elected in 2011 as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

The Brazilian jumps are nearly all gathered in the Throat of the Devil (la Garganta del Diablo), the heart of the falls, the most spectacular point of view. Here the Iguazù River plunges 90 meters into the Devil’s Throat to form 14 main waterfalls and countless other minors. A stunning and deafening jump. A wonderful experience for your senses!

It’s the perfect place to have a direct experience of the power of nature!
