Loving All Things Korean at this Arts and Cultural Performance

A hundred goodie bags to be given away at an event opening is a good way to draw in the crowd. But that’s not the reason why I went to the inaugural of Culture We Love: Korean Festival 2012.

I’ve been to South Korea for a holiday with my wife several years ago. As we enjoyed our 8-day package tour back then, we shortlisted South Korea as a serious contender for a Free & Easy holiday in March of this year. However, due to time constraints, we were not able to revisit South Korea. So the next best thing was to attend a Korean Festival.

It was by chance that I saw an advertisement about “Culture We Love: Korean Festival 2012”. So I asked my wife to join me after work to attend this free event held at Singapore’s “City Square Mall”:http://www.citysquaremall.com.sg/ from March 12 to 18.

According to the advertisement, the event was to celebrate all things Korean. Visitors would be able to “enjoy K-Pop music and cultural performances, culinary and skincare workshops, merchandise, food fairs, and more”.

But I was there because of the photo opportunity it presented me. Based on my previous experiences of attending events, the opening ceremony would often offer visitors a peek of what’s to come at the event.

Organized by a local event company, it was supported by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and the Korea Tourism Organization.

The event also saw the local Korean and Singaporean communities collaborating to showcase their culture.

Opening the event was his Excellency, Oh Joon, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Singapore.

This was followed by a pop dance performance.

The obligatory Taekwondo demonstration.

A song sung by a very enthusiastic group.

Then the crowd was wowed by a traditional dance item.

However, the highlight of the event was the Korean Culture and Arts “Musician of the Year” winner, Coco Jeong Gyeong Hwa’s performance. She performed Korean songs with a traditional musical instrument with her husband, who was rather shy on stage.

And oh, in case you’re wondering if I got a goodie bag, I didn’t. But this lucky kid did!

I shot the Korean performance with an Olympus XA3 camera and the Lomography CN800 color film. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to capture the moment given the lighting conditions, but I was glad at how the photos turned out.

The Lomography Color Negative 35mm 800 ISO film is a high-speed film designed to bring a burst of vibrant colour, as well as great saturation and contrast, in all lighting conditions! Shoot in bright sunshine, grey days, indoors or at night with a flash. See our selection of Lomography films here.
