Six floors of electronic goods and IT gadgets sounds like heaven for an IT geek. This is Sim Lim Square (aka SLS) for you. See it in black and white after the jump!
Sim Lim Square is a large retail complex that offers a wide variety of electronic goods and services ranging from DVDs, cameras, phones, video cameras, and computer parts and servicing. SLS is located in the Rochor area and is a short walk away from Bugis or Little India MRT Stations.
One of the unique feature of SLS are these large air vents that are placed around the building. They remind me of a ship’s funnels.
Inside SLS you can see the large variety of electronic and computer shops.
You can explore each floor sequentially by taking the escalator or you can take the express bubble lift. From the bubble lift, you can have a bird’s eye view of the mall. Bubble lifts are the rage in the late 80s and early 90s. Therefore, if you step into a shopping mall with bubble lifts, you can roughly tell its vintage.
Recently, even the ground floor atrium has been converted into a large retail shop.
From time to time, there are shops offering a good deal and it is common to see shoppers queuing up before the shop is open for business.
However, do be careful when making purchases in SLS, especially if you are a tourist. There are cases of shops overcharging, not including taxes in their quotation, or using bait-&-switch tactics. Do read up and do your research online before heading down there. Buy only from reputable shops such as those with the Star retailer logos.
After several hours of shopping and bargaining, it’s time to take a break and munch on something. There is a spacious air-conditioned food court in basement 1 selling a large variety of yummy food.
One of the major reasons why I like to visit SLS is because I can shop, eat, and have my films processed at my favorite mini lab nearby.
Do drop by SLS if you are in town! :)
