Dongdaemun: The Largest Wholesale and Retail Shopping District in Seoul

Dongdaemun Market is the largest wholesale and retail shopping district in Seoul, South Korea. A very popular shopping and tourist destination. For those who love shopping, this is the place you can get a full range of fashion items that cover from head to toe.

Dongdaemun is always crowded with locals and tourists. This area is divided into retail areas and wholesale areas. Many types of goods can be found here especially silks, fabric, clothes, shoes, and leather goods. Most of the shops open from 10.30am to 5am, with some stores open 24 hours a day.

How to get there:
Subway Line 1 or 4 (Dongdaemun Station), get to Exit 8 or 9

I am sure you will get to Cheonggyecheon (Cheonggye Stream) if you visit Dongdaemun. It was marked as a landmark for Dongdaemun nowadays. I believe that many visitors including me, started their walk along Cheonggyecheon at Dongdaemun. It was a stream where people bathe and washed their clothes for centuries until the government covered it in the late 1950s.

We planned to continue our shopping after having a walk around Cheonggyecheon. Okay, I would like to say that we got lost in the wholesale area where we were supposed to check out the retail malls such as Doota, Migliore, and Hello APM. I guess already passed those buildings but we didn’t know that those were the actual places that we wanted to go to. Thus, I would like to suggest that everyone must do some research before they go. What we did was to just keep on walking and we found a night market which were selling seafood and dry foods. Most of the stalls were manned by lovely and friendly elderly people.

Photos above were taken with an Olympus XA, which was loaded with expired Fujichrome Velvia 100f. I wish that you will not get lost like us when visited Dongdaemun but it is a good “exploring” experience for me as well as I had found something interesting such as the night market.
