Island in the Sun: A Family Holiday in Vilamoura

This year my favourite person turns 70! My number one source of inspiration and support, my dear old Ma! So to mark this milestone, we all decided to pack our bags Brits-abroad style and set off on a family holiday to Vilamoura, Portugal.

My sister found the perfect place to rent for the week, a villa near a golfing complex with a games room, cinema room, hot tub, and swimming pool!

Vilamoura is known for its golf and boating. The harbor has a few shops, cocktail bars, and pubs. If you fancy some nice food, there are a few good places to eat at.

My nieces and nephews have matured into beautiful young people and it was great to see them enjoying their surroundings and have a chance to spend some proper time with them. The swimming pool was built so people could view swimmers from underneath the water from the games room. This gave the youngsters a chance to deliver numerous moonies to family members in the basement! I’ve left those images out!

We played around with this for a while, I was unsure how the shots would come out on the 100 slide but I quite like them. I loved the shots just on entry where they’re surrounded by bubbles.

The villa itself was placed next to a golf course about a 30-minute walk from the harbor, so as you can imagine, a lot of time was spent eating nice food and drinking sangria and mojitos around the pool.

We also decided to book a few trips out. The boys really fancied sea fishing and I wanted to go on a dolphin and wildlife watching boat trip. I decided to just go with the boys on their boat trip, send out some positive vibes to the sea and try to communicate a message to the dolphins with my best Flipper impression. Nobody on the boat caught a sausage and a few group members failed to move much due to feeling queasy.

I always find trying to focus up hard on the stomach when everything is moving around you. It’s always great to get out at sea and being far away in the middle of nowhere for me is great for the mind. On the way home, all of a sudden, out of nowhere the Skipper shouted “Dolphins!” They decided to answer my calls and a group raced in front of the boat, jumping out of the water putting on quite a show.

The market and town at Loule is a good place to go if you fancy getting away from Vilamoura. They have what’s known as the gypsy market where you can buy a Louis Vuitton handbag for 20 Euros. I told my sister she has been ripped off back in UK! I read some reviews of this online that made it out to be quite a scary experience but I found the people friendly and many of them were okay about having their picture taken.

There are also some shops down the traditional streets and coffee shops along the way. The atmosphere was great and the indoor market at the top of the hill sells loads of local produce and handmade crafts.

The only time I really feel like I’m on my holidays I must say is when I’m either sitting outside a bar in the sunshine or at the beach. So I decided to combine the two! Luckily my brother feels exactly the same. We walked from the complex to Vilamoura Beach and there are a few beach hut bars for you to choose from.

I wanted to get some shots of people fishing near the Lighthouse. To get to the lighthouse, we needed to jump across the rocks, this idea at the time seemed great. As I’d consumed a few pints and chose the rather reliable Birkinstock as my climbing shoe, I ended up left at the back only to be rescued by my nephews Mathew and Sam. We got to the end, and the locals were fishing, I managed to have a full conversation with them using the universal sign language that all us Brits are famed for.

So all in all I would say our first large family holiday was a success. I can’t really complain about the weather, anywhere’s got to beat Manchester in April.

Tell me about your beach breaks, I have a few days holiday left that might be used for another ladies week! Where shall I go this time?

Over to you. . .
