Island in the Sun: Malaekahana Beach

On the lucky occasion that I get to make the trip down to the other side of the island, Malaekahana Beach is one of my favorite destinations. Refreshing water, warm sand, and the wind in your hair. What more could you ask for?

This is probably one of the windier beaches on the island of Oahu, which makes this place a great spot for kite surfing and wind surfing (both of which my friends do)! The majority of the time that I come here, it’s to stay for a few days to camp. Staying up late, going crabbing, waking up early with the beach as our backyard, time for tanning, and time for surfing; it’s the good life.

Being beach and lomo junkies, my friend @summsumm decided it was up to us to explore the beach and have our own little photo shoot. Malaekahana has a wide variety of places to take photos of; first and foremost is the beautiful shoreline. Perfect for laying out in the sun for hours, but don’t forget the sunscreen!

It’s not uncommon to meet some new friends on the sand too! :)

Next we have the forest-y area! A fun place for kids to play games and run around in. There’s also a rope swing somewhere close to the beach too!

To get to the next place, you’ll have to walk all the way across the beach towards the rocky area. Don’t forget to take pictures on the way there too! Quite unlike the beach, there’s a lot of growth here. A small stream flows between two banks, there’s stepping stones in the middle. Such an interesting place is bound to be the backdrop of many photos!

And of course, we can’t forget the camping area! We stayed at a place called Tutu’s Hale, right on the beach. You’ve got a place for the bonfire, bunk beds and mattresses, a kitchen, and most importantly, a bathroom!

You won’t want to forget your analogue goodies when you come out here, you’ll probably want to bring more than one camera and multiple rolls of film too!

Doesn’t that sound amazing? I’m sure you’re ready to pack up your bags, book a flight to Hawaii, and reserve a spot at Tutu’s Hale by now. Don’t hesitate, just do it and we’ll be waiting for you at the beach!
