Insadong: Representing the Culture of Seoul's Past and Present

Insadong is a large market which is famous for antiques and artworks in Seoul, South Korea. Insadong Street contains a mixture of a historical and modern atmosphere and represents the culture of Korea's past and present. It is one of my favorite and highly-recommended places in Seoul.

How to get there:
*Subway line 1 (Jonggak Station), Exit 3
*Subway line 3 (Anguk Station), Exit 6
*Insadong is close to Gyeongbokgung as well. I took 10- to15-minute walk to Insadong after visiting Gyeongbokgung during my last trip in Seoul.

Walk towards the left to Insadong after coming out from the Gyeongbukgong entrance. (Gwanghwamun)

A huge calligraphy brush has been built at the entrance of Insadong. You will find that there is a main road in Insadong with alleys on each side. You will be impressed by their designs and environment if you walk through these alleys. There are many unique and well-designed galleries, restaurants, tea houses, and cafes. You can see many traditional Korean fine art here such as calligraphy, paintings, sculptures, local food, and so on. One of the reasons why I like Insadong is because of the goods being sold there. Most of the stores in Insadong specialize in a wide variety of items that can only be purchased in Korea or symbolizes Korea.

We had our lunch in one of the restaurants which are located in the side alleys. Korean meals are always served with a variety of side dishes, which my family and I love the most, especially kimchi.

If you visit Insadong, I am sure that you will get to Ssamziegil which is a popular landmark in Insadong. The huge yellow symbols of Ssamziegil will surely catch your attention. It has been marked as the “Special Insadong within Insadong”. Ssamziegil is built with the distinct spiral-like stairway. Many cafes, souvenir shops, art galleries, and handicraft stores are located in this building. A nice sky garden is located at the fourth level where there is a nice place that you can take a rest. The walls of staircases in Ssamziegil are covered with quirky yet creative graffiti which had impressed me deeply. I really love those colorful paintings and graffiti so much. Operation time is from 10am to 10.30pm.

Photos above were taken with a Olympus XA2 which loaded with expired Konica DNP Centuria 200 and an Eximus UWS which were loaded with an Agfa CT Precisa.
