Enjoying Quirky Kalk Bay, South Africa

Kalk Bay is a quirky seaside village on the outskirts of Cape Town. Squished between the mountains and the sea the main street, it is filled with fascinating antique stores, and the harbor - just across the road - is a hub of colorful fishing boats.

Recently I met some friends for a morning walk along the Kalk Bay pier and a meander through the galleries and antique stores. A wander along the short pier offers lovely views of the surrounding mountains and the colorful fishing boats. Lots of anglers fish off the sides and the local seals love to hang around waiting for scraps, so keep an eye out for them.

There’s a variety of places to eat, all with their own vibe, but by far my favorite is Kalky’s – an old-school fish and chips shop where the queue on weekends attests to the tastiness of the food. You can eat inside or take your meal out onto the pier, but be careful of the vicious seagulls who have a taste for Kalky’s chips! If you’re looking for something more posh, there is also the Harbour House, which is perched right on the sea.

Almost everywhere in and around Cape Town will wow you with its view – but I’ll always visit Kalk Bay for its charming atmosphere and the best fish and chips I’ve ever tasted!
