Spring Fling: Spend a Saturday Shopping in Skipton, UK

Skipton used to be mine and the other half's go-to date spot. I don't know what it is about the quaint little town that we have always loved so much. This time when we visited, it was for an afternoon of shopping in the springtime sun.

Skipton is a market town in North Yorkshire, UK and is only about a half-hour drive from Leeds where I live. It has lots of exciting things that you could lose yourself in for days and days including a castle, canal, river, (complete with boats) and many options for a walk in the country. As I discovered on my most recent visit however, it also has some lovely options for the discerning shopper, including the traditional Saturday market. First of all, it is important to note that even in this day and age of department stores and huge chains taking over the world – Skipton is fairly lacking in these types of shops. There are of course a few clothing stores/banks/etc. that you see in any other town, which have managed to sneak their way in, but even these are in cute stone buildings and they do seem to be few and far between.

For the most part, the shops here seem to be unique to the town and I for one, haven’t seen a lot of them anywhere else I have visited. Then there are all the little alleyways and courtyards, which are home to tonnes of little retailers and they are all super friendly.

I was happiest however, to have discovered on my last visit that we had arrived as the market was in full swing, with stall holders selling everything from candles to kebabs to cardigans, all at very reasonable prices indeed. The market is so easy to find as it occupies the main street through Skipton, on the same road as the castle I mentioned. Dave and I became fairly obsessed with a Greek/Turkish stall where we spent almost £10 on some of the best olives I have ever eaten.

After you have had a day of shopping, sightseeing, and photo-taking, you may be in the mood for a pint or some food. Luckily, Skipton also has some excellent pubs (serving the Skipton-based beer made by Copper Dragon), bars, and restaurants so you can put your feet up and grab a bite.

More information can be found about Skipton here on Wikipedia. And about the market specifically here
