Magnificent Mountains of Harrismith, South Africa

Harrismith is a scenic farming region in the Free State province of South Africa. Some friends and I recently visited one of the beautiful farms in the area and it has now become one of my favorite breaks from the city!

A few weeks ago we gratefully packed our bags on a Friday afternoon to escape the city for the weekend and drove to this lovely spot in the Free State province, about midway between Johannesburg and Durban. I was badly in need of a break from the city and this beautiful part of the world is only around three hours from Joburg so it’s perfect for a weekend getaway.

We stayed at Appin Guest Farm, which features a magnificent lone sandstone mountain called Rensburgs Kop. The mountain dominates the skyline and just begs to be photographed. The rest of the area is made up of rolling natural grassland and crop fields, which glow in the sunshine and move like water in the afternoon breeze.

Rensburg kop is popular for rock-climbing and there are also hiking trails which offer fantastic views but if you’re not feeling energetic, I also just really enjoyed lazing in the sunshine and taking in the tranquility. For history enthusiasts, there are many battlefields within close proximity.

What a lovely peaceful place – I can’t wait to go back soon.

Very nice article! I've only been to the Western Cape region, which is magnificent, but next time I come to South Africa, I hope I'll get to go in Harrismith!
