Helsingør is located less than an hour’s drive north of Copenhagen, on the big island of Sjælland (Zealand) in Denmark. Helsingør is a sister city with the Swedish Helsingborg, which is four miles off the coast of Helsingør. The Scandlines ferry ride from Helsingborg to Helsingør is a short 20 minutes ride. The stunning Kronborg Castle could be seen from afar while approaching the coast.

Kronborg Castle is a Renaissance castle with its unique location on the Øresund Sound. It has the largest Great Hall in Europe. In 2000, the castle was added to the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

The figure of Hamlet appeared for the first time in Saxo Grammaticus’ Deeds of the Danes in the 12th century. William Shakespeare wrote the play “The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark” around 1600, immortalizing Saxo’s legendary prince.
