Traveling to the Majestic North Part 3: An Old Town Preserved in Vigan, Ilocos Sur

A 2-hour bus ride from Laoag City, Ilocos Norte took us to the town of preserved old Philippine houses that is Vigan City, Ilocos Sur.

I have always known and read that Vigan City is where time tested colonial houses still stand. Aside from that in Intramuros, Manila, Calle Crisologo in Vigan is probably one of the most pictured locations for Philippine travel and I got lucky to visit this place finally. As for my 3rd and final instalment of my discovery of the majestic North, here are my somewhat time warp discoveries in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur.

Calle Crisologo in Vigan is one main entry to the long street and connecting streets that are filled with old Philippine house structures known as the “bahay na bato”. Built during the colony of Spain, many have thought that these buildings were from the Spaniards’ influence but in reality, it is just the sturdier evolution of the “bahay kubo”… quick trivia. You may opt to stroll around the area by walking or have that old school feel by riding a kalesa which are a lot in the area. Similar to Laoag City, Vigan embraced the colonial structures and blended it to modern day establishments like food chains and supermarkets among others.

I didn’t let this day pass without me having to ride the kalesa. The driver of the kalesa or “kutsero” told us that we should also visit the bell tower. It was the location of the late Fernando Poe Jr.’s classic movie “Panday”… and so we did!

A tricycle ride further got us to visit the city museum and the “Baluarte” which is home to free strolling animals, tigers not included, haha. For one, an ostrich even passed by as I was taking pictures of the other animals! The animal sanctuary is owned by Chavit Singson and allows guests to mingle with the animals… admission is free!
