The Smallest Maritime Republic of Italy

Noli is a town in the region of Liguria, Italy, about 50km from Genoa. This town was an independent republic from 1193 until 1797, the smallest one of the five so-called "Maritime Republics". One of the smallest towns of the coast of Liguria, but one of the most romantic locations!

Noli is a small town in the west coast of Liguria, Italy, which is rich in history and charm. It has a population of less than 3,000 inhabitants, but it is a place with great history with ancient churches and a Romanesque basilica dating back to the 11th century.

Noli belonged to the five “Maritime Republics” (The most popular ones are Amalfi, Pisa, Genoa, and Venice) until 1797, when the Napoleonic invasion in 1797 put an end to its sovereignty.

The maritime republics were city-states. All these cities during their independence had very similar systems of government in which the merchant class had considerable power. The maritime republics were heavily involved in the Crusades, taking advantage of the political and trading opportunities resulting from these wars.

Walking along the beach in the spring season you can see many tools of local fishermen, with their winches, their boots, and their boats placed on the sand during the daytime.

Its narrow cobbled streets are full of small shops selling crafts and local food, as the delicious pesto sauce (a sauce made from basil, pine nuts, garlic, and olive oil) and the local “focaccia alla genovese” (Genoa’s white pizza)!

You can stay in charming family-run hotels, excellent for their hospitality, good food and the friendly ways! In the picture below you can see a beautiful small hotel decorated with a magnificent wisteria!

Every corner of the city is decorated with curious details.

In the summertime, Noli became a crowded touristic place, great for sunbathers! So, the best seasons to visit this town for its art and culture is spring or autumn!

All these photos were taken with my Lomo LC-A and a Kodak Tri-X 400 film developed in Ilfosol 3.
