There's Something About Seoul

What makes a great travel experience? Great food, picturesque scenery, vibrant nightlife, awesome shopping, clean environment, efficient mass transportation...I could go on but the point here is, all these - and more, at least in my opinion, can be found in Seoul.

A charming city that never ceases to delight the senses, Seoul, South Korea is not only home to one of Lomography’s Gallery Stores, it is also a great location that has grown more and more popular for travelers. Being one of my favorite cities, I could go on about how awesome everything is but why not check out what your fellow lomographers think about Seoul?

Food
When it comes to food, you better be ready to indulge while you’re on a Seoul holiday. Aside from the world-famous Korean beef, Seoul also has a great variety of street food and traditional dishes – all tempting you to ditch your diet. As for lomographer wallflowersforjane she has thoroughly enjoyed Seoul’s coffee culture, with its abundance of unique cafes and patisseries. In one of her many articles about her own Seoul sojourn, she talks about Coffeest Cafe saying, “Coffeest Café is located behind Gyeonghuigung and the building that it is located has constructed glass floors to simultaneously protect and showcase the foundations of the ancient palace. The building itself is a little nondescript but I guarantee you will smell the place before you actually see it. Coffeest roasts all its coffee in-house and the scents are amazing.”

Shopping
For shopaholics, you’ll definitely love Seoul thanks to the abundance of shopping options available – from market finds to high-end labels, you can literally shop ‘til you drop. Some of the more popular shopping destinations include Myeongdong and Dongdaemun – where there’s even a mall open ‘til 4 in the morning! Lakandaula shares, “With high rise buildings all around, Myeongdong hosts a multitude of upscale shopping centers, department stores, boutiques, restaurants, and investment and securities firms. Products on sale here range from mid-to-high priced. You will never be out of international fashion if you shop here considering the many choices of international and local brands including Louis Vuitton, Bulgari, Lacoste, Nature Republic, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Forever 21.” If you’re a beauty junkie, take advantage of the many local skincare and cosmetics brands (Etude House, TonyMoly, The Face Shop, Skinfood, Holika Holika, Nature Republic etc.) in Seoul, and judging by the number of Japanese tourists hoarding their precious BB creams and face masks, it’s definitely worth a try – and very affordable too!

Local Flavor
For culture vultures, Seoul’s rich history will amaze you. There are various palaces, museums, and other historical and cultural places of interests for you to visit. There’s also Insadong where you can buy a lot of interesting souvenirs and indulge in some traditional South Korean treats. Wallflowersforjane suggests, Changgyeonggung Palace, “Located in central Seoul, Changgyeonggung (Changgyeong Palace) is one of the Five Grand Palaces of the Joseon Dynasty and one of the best spots for viewing the cherry blossoms in spring.”

Fun
There’s never a shortage on fun when it comes to Seoul – whether you’re a hopeless romantic who likes doing silly “couple things” with his/her significant other (check out Namsan Tower and leave your own couple’s lock), you love going to amusement parks (there’s Everland and LotteWorld), or you love animals (check out the Cat not the Dog cafe in Myeongdong), there’s bound to be something you’d love to do.
