The Gap Years: My Year Away: Part 1

Although not strictly speaking of a "Gap Year", in 2002, my friend and I decided to buy a one-way ticket to Australia via Thailand and Singapore. We had no concrete plans but thought we would see what happened along the way. Ten years later, I look back at that time as one of the best in my life!

After saving like mad back here in the UK, my friend and I left the sunny shores of Blighty in Spring 2002. We packed our spanking new backpacks with the essentials: sarongs, flip flops, and our trusted Lonely Planet book. First stop, Bangkok. This was my first long haul flight and so I was rather excited! Once we arrived, we soon found our “backpacker feet” and after a few days of sightseeing, we booked a train to take us South (which was a real experience in itself) to do some island hopping!

We visited Koh Samui, Koh Pha Ngan, and then popped across to Krabi where we set sail to Koh Phi Phi. We spent way longer than we initially planned as we fell in love with Thailand. It’s a gorgeous country with lovely people and amazing food!

After just over a month, we managed to drag ourselves away from the Land of Smiles and traveled South down to Malaysia by van where we made a pit stop in George Town.

We would have liked to have traveled for longer but due to funds and the fact that we had a flight waiting to take us onwards, we jumped on a plane to Singapore. It was a bit like Planes, Trains, and Automobiles but we made it! Next stop, Australia.
