Who says you need to spend heaps on a venue to enjoy a date? It’s the thought (and lots of creativity) that counts. Here’s another cheesy idea.
Sometimes, the best way to impress a date is to use your imagination. With a great imagination and some improvisation, you can create a happy memory that your date will remember for a long time. Here’s a common scenario. You know that your time with your date is limited for whatever reasons beyond your control. So instead of both of you spending time traveling to a date spot, consider meeting your date near his or her home. Ideally, look for spots so close to home that it’s often overlooked as a date spot.
Using my neighborhood as an example, there are plenty of public places for a date. Some are obvious, while others relatively well hidden.
Located at the foot of Block 53 along Toa Payoh Lorong 5 in Singapore and about three meters above street level, is a playground, reflexology path, and rest area packed into an area the size of a basketball court. This is probably why most pedestrians walking along the main road would miss this spot completely.
It was only by chance that I discovered this place. One day, during a lomo walk, I decided to check out that area when I noticed a group of youngsters hanging out there, having a blast together. And I thought to myself that it sure makes a great inexpensive date spot for the residents. You just need to bring your own drinks and snacks, which you can purchase at the petrol station just across the road. Or if you want, and don’t mind being cheesy, have a night time candle-lit dinner. If you’re culinary-inclined and able to whip up your date’s favorite food, it would be a great opportunity to win him/her over with your cooking skills.
If you are married with young kids and still want to have some time together without leaving the kids alone, this could be the place for you. There’s a small playground there to entertain your kids while you romance your other half.
Of course, feel free to use the surrounding features as props during your date. For example, you may want to encourage your date to try out the Reflexology Walk and take this opportunity to hold your date’s hand as a pretext to supporting him/her. (Sneaky, I know.)
For couples still in the courtship phase, this is a good reason to hold on to each other. But remember, because you’re quite close to the lion’s den, it is advisable to avoid public displays of affection like smooching. You don’t know who is watching you.
But if you want to play it safe, then you can just sit there and look at the bougainvillea.
