A Science and Engineering Faculty Surrounded by Art!

Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia (Faculty of Science and Technology; FCT) is one of the nine academic units of Universidade Nova de Lisboa (New University of Lisbon; UNL). Read on to find out more about it.

FCT was founded in 1977 and is a public school dedicated to science and engineering. The campus is located at Monte de Caparica and takes up approximately 30has, having over 7,500 students, 1,400 of which are postgraduate.

Apart from the academic buildings and the library, the campus has many other infrastructures, such as student halls, sports infrastructures, child daycare, health services, bookshop, bank, travel agency, grocery store, and various restaurants and cafeterias.

I’ve had to spend quite a lot of time during the day at the faculty and I used to be really bummed out because of that. The thing is: it is kind of in the middle of nowhere (the nearest town is a bit of a stretch by foot) so I’d always think I had nothing to photograph nearby and I never got to take any analogue photos during the week which I hated! It is very calm and quiet around the campus, which I’m not used to as I live in Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal, and I love city life. It takes you about 45 minutes to 1 hour by public transportation to get to Lisbon and by the time I got back to the city at the end of the day, it was already dark and I ended up not being able to take photos during the week in the city either!

It was really getting me down not taking any photos during weekdays so I decided to try to look at FCT with different eyes and I discovered that although it may be a science school you will find it is full of interesting artsy details here and there.

It has some lovely commissioned graffiti art:

Sculptures and art installations here and there:

Great architecture:

Lots of trees and street signs (both of which I love to photograph!)

Interesting colorful details like the child daycare infrastructures for the children to play:

And occasionally you will find some lovely cloud formations:

And some interesting, unexpected photo opportunities around campus:

All in all, while it is a bit isolated and doesn’t have much to visit nearby if you pay attention to the details you will find some lovely things to photograph inside the campus. Also if you happen to drop by during the summer the good thing is: it is not that far away from the beach!
