MassKara 2011: Masquerade Pinoy-Style

They weren’t kidding when they said that the MassKara Festival was world-famous. It cannot substitute for Brazil’s Mardi Gras but it sure can satiate one’s appetite for grand and colorful festivities. As for me, I left Bacolod hungry for more of that fun eye candy!

What I love most about my country is that merrymaking is in the blood of the nation. The Philippines is teeming with a wide variety of festivals all-year round and I made it my 2011 New Year’s resolution to experience all of them. The one which I especially looked forward to was the MassKara Festival.

The distinctive character of the MassKara Festival is that unlike most festivals in the country, it isn’t a commemoration of a religious figure or event. Rather, it began as an effort to uplift the spirits of the Negrenses who were deeply saddened by a tragedy that struck their region.

Three decades later and the festival continues to uplift the spirit of the Negrenses and the rest of the world as well. The streets of Bacolod were teeming with people from all walks of life, each wanting to witness the wonderful play of hues and warm smiles the city is especially famed for.

For lomographers and analogue photographers who always have a penchant for vivid colors, head to Bacolod in October and experience it for yourself!
