You might think that a big town like Leeds would enjoy an abundance of authentic Japanese restaurants. Alas, this is not the case. Little Tokyo is head and shoulders above the rest for lots and lots of reasons.
Little Tokyo is located in Leeds’ city centre and from the outside, it looks like a tiny little cafe. It is open both for lunch and dinner, and I understand that at certain times of the day they have a meal deal which changes regularly. I often find myself going there when we want Japanese food because the choices in Leeds is quite limited, and there doesn’t seem to be very many good places. I also always end up ordering the same food every time I go as it is just so good! This is the chicken Teriyaki bento box meal.
I usually have this with one of their juices and a few cups of green tea (the tea is delicious and free, and they walk around all the time topping this up for you). The staff here are polite and always really smiley. Plus they are in traditional dress, which gives the place a very authentic feel. The decor is really simple in some ways, lots of untreated wood, low benches, and almost cafeteria-style tables. They also have a fountain and small stream in the upstairs bit with a bridge over it. This is filled with a variety of huge koi carps. Despite looking small outside, the restaurant has a lot of space inside as it is spread over two floors. My boyfriend says the desserts are to die for – they do wasabi ice cream, lychee sorbet and his favorite, marshmallow crispy parcels (these are like spring rolls stuffed with marshmallow instead of veg). I would recommend this place to anyone who is in Leeds and loves authentic Japanese cuisine in beautiful surroundings.
