Fighting the Snow in the Börzsöny

We visited the mountain Börzsöny on the last snowy weekend of the winter; had fun, got tired, and made photos.

North of Budapest, along the Danube, there is a chain of small villages and town at the feet of friendly-sized mountains. That’s where we went to have some fresh air and to try our shoes in knee-high snow. We took the train at Verőce – for some reason, I almost always tend to start my trips here. Perhaps, because I grew familiar with this nice-looking village. We headed in the direction of the mountains, aiming another small village, Nógrád. For some time, our path basically went beside the track of a small railroad.

After reaching a small hamlet, Magyarkút, we waited for another travel mate of ours for some time in the local pub. The owner was a hunter, who put all the games he shoot on his menu. (We resisted the temptation and only had some hot wine.) Half an hour later, our colleague arrived with his dogs, so we went into the woods. This forest is intensely cultivated, it is not uncommon to see large heaps of logs in every part of the year. However, the deeper and deeper you get into the forest, the more and more peaceful it is.

Of course, no trip is complete without getting lost. We indeed lost the tourist track for some time, but at the end, with backtracking our steps, we did find our way. Up here, everything was covered in knee-high snow and the slopes were fairly steep. So when we reached the railroad again, we were really relieved. Of course, there was still a small hill and a large field to cross, but we also knew we have plenty of time to reach our train going home – so we could catch our breath.

We arrived well in time to Nógrád; so we arrived back to Budapest early in the evening, just as planned. We were very tired but also happy – it was nice to have some fresh air. A few days later, the snow melted so most probably, this was our last chance to trot in the snow ’til next winter.
