La Défense: the Other Side of Paris

Throughout the world, Paris is well known as the city of love. But there is at least one totally different place that is worth to be visited. In western Paris, right after passing the Seine, you enter a whole new world - it's name is "La Défense". The district is quite famous for it's architecture and office buildings and last but not least, for a feeling of déjà vu - but we will get back to that later on. Take a journey to the wonderful world of La Défense.

Just a few minutes ago you’ve been walking through narrow streets, beguiled by the picturesque beauty of old Paris. Visiting spots like the Eiffel Tower, the Basilica of the Sacré Cœur or the Louvre is an absolute must for everyone who are visiting Paris for the first time. But now we will move on to a very special place. We enter a wide street, leading into a world of glass and concrete. We enter La Défense.

The district got its name from a bronze sculpture called „La Défense de Paris“. The sculpture looks a bit misplaced, surrounded by all those office blocks.

In the 1960s the whole area got a new shape. Office blocks and high-rise buildings became the dominant appearance of La Défense. The area developed well and is today known to be the largest office district in Europe. With 225m in height and 56 floors, the „First Tower“ is the highest building in France.

As there are many places that are waiting to be discovered by you and your camera, there is at least one really special thing about La Défense. As you stroll along all the high-rise buildings, maybe you will get a feeling of déjà vu. Right in the elongated „axe historique“ with its Arc de Triomphe, another building will get in your way. It’s the „Grande Arche“, looking just like a modern interpretation of the historical Arc de Triomphe. It was inaugurated in 1989 and gives you a great view over La Défense and all its geometrical beauty.

As this is just a very quick tour through La Défense, there are many things of interest not mentioned in this article. I don’t claim this article to be complete by any means – it is more of an appetizer to visit this very special district. The beauty of La Défense is hard to describe, but you will feel the charm when you are there.

Have a nice holiday and spend some inspired hours at La Défense – the other side of the city of love.
